Prescott v. Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission
Prescott v. Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission, 2015 OK 54 (Okla. 2015), was an Oklahoma Supreme Court case in which the Court found the placement of a Ten Commandments monument at the Oklahoma State Capitol unconstitutional. The case was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma on behalf of four plaintiffs challenging the placement of the monument following its donation by Representative Mike Ritze. Defended by the Oklahoma Attorney General and the Liberty Institute, the case was decided by a 7-2 majority of the Court, which found that the monument violated the Oklahoma Constitution.〔
The case has proven both influential and controversial, leading to calls for changing the Oklahoma Constitution from some conservatives in the Oklahoma Legislature. The case has been subject to heavy press coverage both in Oklahoma and nationally.
